Max on D-D-DVD... finally!

It will come as no surprise to most visitors that the ABC series has finally been slated for commercial release on DVD. In fact, it's probably the newsflash that drove you to find (or re-find) this site.

The set is being produced by Shout! Factory, a video house that specializes in small, often orphaned or incomplete television series. I know from back chat with the Max creative team and others that S!F has done a good job with the set and there will be significant extras - interviews, commentary, extra stuff.

It's slated for release on August 1st. Yes, of this year - although in the Max world, such details are never of-course.

Unfortunately S!F has steadfastly ignored my inquiries and offers to contribute from the extensive project files and archives, so I don't know any more about the set than you do.

Feel free to comment in this thread and add in any information you find floating around on the web.

And... ahem... if you should happen to be one of the very, very few who were shameful enough to buy or download a pirated copy of the series... well, it's one of those cases where the crime can be forgiven because of the persistent lack of options. But forgiveness comes at a price, and strangely enough, that price exactly equals the delivered cost of a legitimate set, which you will plonk down as soon as possible. Right? We good on that? Okay.

Hey all, a new press release from Shout! Factory on the upcoming MH DVD:

It's a 5 DVD set with all 14 episodes as well as many interviews with the MH creators. The box looks pretty spiffy too.

Yeah, it´s finally out....AT LAST!!! The only bad thing is there´s a great roundtable interview....WITHOUT MATT FREWER!!!! I felt really sad to see that MAtt didn´t want to get involve in this DVD release. Maybe he felt he has always been typecasted with Max...cry

Another bad thing is that the British pilot is not included in the pack :-S

But Hey, I´m sure once they managed to get the movie rights they will release a decent DVD and Blue Ray of that brilliant masterpiece. biggrin

That will be good to see. I hope there will be extras in the DVD of the British telefilm like there are in the DVD release of the American TV series. It would be nice to see a debate between Chris Young and Paul Spurrier regarding which Bryce Lynch is a more accurate portrayal of a teenage hacker/researcher in the time period when Max' took place.

Mod, fell free to remove my previous post; there is nothing new there. What I meant to say is that Amazon has shipped the new MH DVD's. Finally I can watch Max is high quality and not some digitizing of a poor quality VHS or a taping of Bravo or TechTV or SciFi. I will keep you posted as to quality and content. Since Max was pre-HD, it won't be 1040p but it should be a HECK of a lot clearer.

I got my DVDs several days ago and have been thrilled to be watching them. I went to the extras first, and particularly found the interviews with the creators, writers and producers to be fascinating. It seems that everyone involved were indeed, and still are, quite aware of what a special project it was. One thing I was not aware of was that Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton seemed to be left out when the American series got underway, which was only quickly touched upon in the interviews but it clearly and understandably upset them.

The image quality and sound quality of the episodes is fantastic. I also got a cool promotional photo of the principal cast members. Kudos to Shout Factory... I can finally leave behind the bootleg episodes I picked up in the Fringes several years back! It's my pleasure to pay up for this long-awaited set!

I also finally got my long-awaited copy of the DVD set. Amazing! I was not in the slightest disappointed. I also went to the interviews dvd. Great stuff there. I adore George Stone, and his interview was fascinating. I would love to learn more about him and his creations/contributions.

I am so glad this finally got released.

20 minutes into the future...

T. Good "daddie-O" (Limerick, PA USA) over at Amazon offered an interesting review. I'm not sure about his whole post... it's a bit confusing... but he says that there are missing elements in the DVD Release.

One of his less-than-linear comments is: "But where I had hoped for all the quirky Max Headroom smart-alec remarks as the show went to commercial and unbelievably not even the Farwell Address were to be seen."

I haven't seen anything about this... but in watching the episodes (I'm only up to the beginning of Season Two so far) I got the feeling parts were missing. I seem to remember Max saying all sorts of clever stuff going into Commercials.

If this is all true, it'd be nice for some generous person to digitized these short bits so all of us Max Heads can keep them with the set.

I haven't read a good review on the set yet... Anyone know where a good tech review is posted?

So, Blank James... Any ideas?

Hi Guys - new around here. Currently housebound following surgery, and dug out my dodgy old Max DVDs for viewing. Interested to hear that there is now a legit DVD release, although disappointed to hear that they are not complete, and that there may be some 'missing bits'. Of course the new release includes some new 'extras' - quite a lot in fact, to take it up to 5 discs. has anyone s got the new set? What do they think of the extras? Worth having?

It's well worth having at the prices you can currently get it for.

The episodes definitely look better than any previous versions, although bear in mind that they have been transferred from analog video media so there's an upper limit to how good they can look compared to film or digital.

The extras are interviews and documentaries, and they contain lots of interesting information. I really enjoyed them. The one thing they don't contain is Matt Frewer unfortunately.

There aren't any of Max's appearances outside the US TV show in the set, but Shout Factory have a transfer of the TV movie ready to go and sales of the DVD set were good, so here's hoping...
