Telebiography

Network 23 board member who in the telefilm asks Grossman if he wants a live demonstration of the blipvert effect. (In the US pilot, the line is given to Cheviot.)

His name may have originated because he and Grossberg make quite a, um, pear.

Black Controller

1.3

Portrayed by

Jay Arlen Jones

Telebiography

Controller who first answers call from Mel when he is trying to reach Edison Carter.

Character

Blank Bruno

Episodes

1.6

Portrayed by

Peter Crook

Telebiography

Brilliant computer hacker and former teacher at the elite Academy of Computer Sciences, where Bryce Lynch was one of his pupils. Erased his central computer files, becoming a Blank, as a protest against the "false worship" of the computer and its use in controlling the masses. Essentially ethical, though, and will stay within limits to avoid harming individuals.

Has a pet toad he charmingly refers to as "God."

Character

Blank Reg

Episodes

Telefilm, 1.3, 1.4, 1.6
Regular cast member, second season

Portrayed by

William Morgan Sheppard

Telebiography

Burned-out and aging ex-heavy metal fan Reg is a "blank" - someone who has had themselves erased from the online data banks. He is the anchor, VJ and technical man for Big Time Television.

In "Blanks," we find out how and why Reg became a Blank: He was working with some computer hackers (apparently Bruno, Traker and the others we see in this episode), in "a bit of bother" - tax and minor violence problems - and the hackers kindly erased his central computer files. Life as a Blank has become something of a philosophy now for Reg... and others.

Character

[Blank] Dominique

Episodes

Telefilm, 1.3, 1.4, 1.6

Portrayed by

Hilary Tindall (Telefilm)

Concetta Tomei (US Series)

Telebiography

The improbably elegant Dominique is, like her employee Reg, a "blank." She is the owner of Big Time Television and rather helplessly dependent on Reg's technical abilities and viewer popularity, although she clearly despises his programming.

Her exact relationship with Reg is unclear. She is "the boss," but a distant affection passes between them. She objects to Reg seeing another woman in "Body Banks," but is careful to deflect Reg's comment about loving her in "Blanks."

Character

Blond Controller

Episodes

1.2, 1.3

Portrayed by

B.L. Collins (?)

Telebiography

Controller who is fishing for stories and catches the Bureau Burner attack that Murray fumbles.

Character

Braddock, Frank

Episodes

1.5

Portrayed by

Gary Swanson

Telebiography

Braddock is a sleazy and low-rent "packager" who puts together programs for sale to the networks. His stock in trade has been a pretend revolutionary group, the White Brigade, whose antics do not impress Cheviot and don't generate ratings.

When the terrorists turn real, Braddock is there to sell them to the highest bidder... until he is caught in one their staged explosions and wiped out along with the White Brigade.

Character

Breugal
aka Breughal, Breughel

Episodes

Telefilm, 1.1, 1.3

Portrayed by

Hilton McRae (Telefilm)

Jere Burns (US Series)

Telebiography

The charmingly brutal Breugal is a thug for hire with a taste for dirty work. He's also a body snatcher who makes a living picking up dead or nearly dead victims and delivering them to body banks for a bounty. He and his dim partner Mahler have discovered that creating their own still-warm, perhaps even still-living victims is good for a bonus.

Intelligent and either well-educated or well-read, Breugal is known to quote Shakespeare, sing popular old songs and reason incisively while performing his unpleasant work.

Character

Carter, Edison

Episodes

All

Portrayed by

Matt Frewer

Telebiography

The best reporter on television, Carter satellites globally for Network 23. His show, "What I Want to Know," (aka "The Edison Carter Show") commands instant attention when it airs with his hard-hitting, no-holds-barred investigations.

While investigating viewer deaths due to his own network's use of the compressed "blipvert" ads, he was knocked unconscious while trying to elude capture by thugs Breugal and Mahler. While unconscious, his memories were scanned by Bryce Lynch and used to create the simulation that named itself Max Headroom.

Befitting his status, his income appears to be substantial, as in an era when most seem to be homeless or living in squalid tenements, his apartment is a luxurious penthouse atop one of the taller buildings in the city - so luxurious that network president Cheviot once commandeers it for a company party.

Character

Cheviot, Ben

Episodes

All

Portrayed by

Constantine Gregory (Telefilm)

George Coe (US Series)

Telebiography

Network 23 board member who, in the telefilm and first series episode, opposes Grossman/Grossberg and ultimately replaces him. President of Network 23 throughout remainder of TV series.

In the series, Cheviot is co-builder of Network 23, along with Grossberg.

In the unproduced episode "Theora's Tale," Cheviot is revealed to be Theora's father.

James "Gypsy" Haake

Telebiography

Dancer of uncertain gender in "Caligula's," where Carter catches up with Breugal and Mahler.

Character

Crane, Janie

Episodes

1.5, 1.6

Portrayed by

Lisa Niemi

Telebiography

Janie Crane is an "eager new staff reporter" at Network 23. In "War," she wiles an RR-7 gun camera from equipment manager Phil and sets out after a dangerous story - the first staged explosion by the phony terrorist group, the White Brigade. Injured in the blast and then captured by the terrorists, she is seconds from becoming shrapnel in another staged explosion when she is rescued by Carter and Martinez.

She apparently becomes a regular reporter, as she is in the field covering the arrest of Blanks in "Blanks."

Character

David
